A Smoky Mountain Retreat Worth Building a Trip Around

A trip built around a place, not an itinerary, is the kind of travel that stays with you.

Blackberry Farm has earned its reputation slowly, and that patience is precisely what makes it worth the journey. Fifty years in the hospitality industry is a rare thing, and the property marks the milestone without theatrics, which tells you something about how it has stayed relevant. The farm sits on 4,200 acres in Walland, Tennessee, at the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, and its sister property, Blackberry Mountain, occupies 5,200 acres above it. Rates at both include dining, on-property transportation, and certain activities. That structure matters. It removes the small decisions that quietly erode a trip and leaves room for the ones that restore you. The same instinct toward editing and intention runs through our own pages, whether we are considering The Trouser That Elevates a Graphic Tee Beyond Denim or tracing how Choulie Reclaims Patchouli as the Scent of Quiet Luxury. Restraint is the through line.

The two properties are not interchangeable, and choosing well is the whole exercise. Blackberry Farm is the classic one, more formal, built around a working farm with sheep pastures, a larder, and gardens that feed the chefs. Its 68 accommodations vary from cottage suites to multi-bedroom houses, and each comes with a golf cart for getting around. Dining is the centerpiece: breakfast and lunch at The Main House, dinner at The Barn or The Dogwood, with meals included from arrival through departure morning. Blackberry Mountain opened in 2019 and carries a different ethos entirely, modern and zen, with wellness woven through the culinary program, the spa, and the adventure offerings across terrain that is half private nature reserve. If you want tradition and a view of the white rocking chairs at sunrise, choose the Farm. If you want movement and quiet rigor, choose the Mountain.

There is a practical lesson in how this property has sustained itself for five decades. It never chased novelty for its own sake. The white farmhouse fence, the boathouse and pond, the 19th-century barn relocated from Pennsylvania and rebuilt as a restaurant in 2007: these are decisions made once and held. Celebrities pass through, and privacy holds, but the property does not trade on that. It trades on consistency of feeling. That is the harder luxury to manufacture, and the one worth booking a trip around.

Our takeaway is specific. Book the Farm in a shoulder season, when the weather allows you to dine outdoors daily and the seasonal menu shifts under you, and plan at least one guided hike. Then ask yourself whether you are a Farm person or a Mountain person, because the answer will shape your next stay more than any amenity list.
