Confirmed: Professional Makeup Artists Swear By These Products for Mature Skin

The beauty landscape is perpetually shifting, driven by evolving consumer desires and, crucially, the insights of those working at the forefront: professional makeup artists. The recent article, "Confirmed: Professional Makeup Artists Swear By These Products for Mature Skin," taps into a growing and increasingly sophisticated market. It's no longer enough to simply offer anti-aging products; consumers, particularly those embracing the beauty of aging gracefully, are seeking nuanced solutions that enhance rather than mask. This article's focus on expert recommendations feels particularly relevant, as trust in peer-reviewed or professionally endorsed advice continues to rise in a world saturated with influencer marketing. The emphasis on products that cater specifically to mature skin—addressing concerns like hydration, luminosity, and minimizing the appearance of fine lines—aligns perfectly with a desire for authenticity and results-driven beauty. It's a shift away from chasing an unattainable ideal and towards celebrating the unique beauty that comes with experience. We’ve previously explored the importance of self-care rituals in achieving this, as seen in our piece I've Perfected How to DIY a Facial at Home—Here's Everything You Need to Elevate the Experience, which highlights the growing trend of at-home treatments designed to complement professional care.

What's particularly compelling about this article is its implicit understanding of the mature consumer’s mindset. They are discerning, informed, and less susceptible to fleeting trends. They’re looking for quality, efficacy, and products that align with their values. The article’s reliance on expert opinion reinforces this sense of credibility. Furthermore, the focus on specific product recommendations—rather than broad claims—demonstrates a commitment to providing genuinely helpful information. This aligns with a broader movement within the beauty industry toward transparency and ingredient awareness. Consumers are increasingly scrutinizing labels and demanding to know exactly what they’re putting on their skin, and seeking advice from those with proven expertise. The pursuit of a radiant, healthy complexion, regardless of age, is a universal desire, but the approach to achieving it must evolve with the individual. This resonates with our previous exploration of sensory experiences and how they contribute to a sense of well-being, as discussed in Fresh, Clean and Enticing—These Unexpected Perfumes Are Forecast to Dominate Autumn, where the focus on nuanced fragrance profiles reflects a similar desire for personalized and sophisticated experiences.

The broader significance of this development lies in its challenge to traditional beauty marketing narratives. For years, the industry has been dominated by a youth-obsessed culture, often promoting products that promise to erase signs of aging. While anti-aging products still hold a place in the market, there’s a growing recognition that celebrating the natural beauty of mature skin is not only more realistic but also more empowering. This shift is driven, in part, by a generational change in attitudes toward aging, with many women embracing their wrinkles and gray hair as symbols of wisdom and experience. The article’s focus on enhancing, rather than erasing, the signs of aging, reflects this evolving perspective. It’s about finding products that work *with* the skin, rather than against it, to create a look that is both radiant and authentic. This aligns with the broader cultural conversation around embracing individuality and rejecting unrealistic beauty standards. Elevating one's personal style, as we touched upon in If You Want Compliments, Elevate Your Jewellery Collection With These Cool Girl-Approved Brands, also contributes to a feeling of confidence and self-assuredness, a sentiment that complements a mindful approach to skincare.

Looking ahead, it’s likely we’ll see even more personalized and targeted beauty solutions emerge, catering to the specific needs of different skin types and ages. The rise of AI-powered skincare analysis tools and customized product formulations promises to further revolutionize the industry. However, the core principle—that beauty is about celebrating individuality and embracing the natural aging process—will likely remain a guiding force. A key question to watch is how brands will navigate the increasingly complex intersection of anti-aging technology and the growing desire for authenticity and self-acceptance. Will they continue to push products that promise to reverse the effects of time, or will they embrace a more holistic approach that focuses on nourishing and protecting the skin at every stage of life?

My mum and I share many things—among them a love of heels, a fancy glass of wine, and, of course, a good romcom. But our shared love of makeup is one of the things that connects us most. We’ve been “borrowing” makeup out of each other’s cosmetic bags for as long as I can remember, and that’s only become more true over the years. That was until recently, when she came to me with a dilemma: what makeup products should she invest in now that she has mature skin?

The idea that your makeup routine should change with age is nothing new. As your skin changes and, in turn, your collagen production declines, it’s only natural that the products that work for you change as well. Sun exposure, genetics, ethnicity, and lifestyle choices such as drinking and smoking can all affect skin maturity. And if you’re also on the hunt for mature-skin-approved makeup products that are genuinely worth the investment, never fear. As someone who’s luckily enough to work in beauty and have a contact book filled with professionals with years of experience, I sat down with an expert to answer my mum’s burning questions about mature skin and what makeup products are actually worth the splurge. Here’s what she had to say...

What Happens to Our Skin As We Age?

Cassie Lomas, a professional makeup artist with over 30 years of experience and the founder of the brand CASSIE, states, “Skin loses collagen and elastin as we age, so it becomes thinner and less bouncy. You get more dryness, less natural radiance, and fine lines start showing up more, especially around the eyes and mouth. Makeup that used to sit beautifully can start clinging to dry patches or settling into lines. It's not a bad thing; it just means your approach needs to change with your skin.”

How Do I Prep Mature Skin for Makeup?

"Prep matters more with mature skin than at any other age. Cleanse, serum, then a good moisturiser, giving each layer a minute to sink in before the next. Don't rush straight into makeup after moisturiser, or everything will slip. A hydrating primer on top smooths things out without adding weight. Comfortable, cushioned skin is what you're after—never dry or tight—because makeup always looks better on well-prepped skin", says Lomas.

Makeup Application Tips for Those With Mature Skin

When it comes to applying makeup on mature skin, Lomas always follows four application tips:

  1. Less is more - Build in thin layers rather than one heavy layer, so it still looks like skin.
  2. Blend upwards and outwards - Work in the direction the skin naturally lifts.
  3. Set only where you need to - Target the T-zone rather than the whole face, so you don't lose radiance elsewhere.
  4. Soft over hard - Whether it's your brows, eyeliner, blush, or more, a soft and blended finish will always win over anything harsh or defined.

With all of this in mind, I asked Lomas for the go-to products she relies on when putting makeup on mature skin. Keep scrolling to discover her expert-approved suggestions.

What Ingredients Should Those With Mature Skin Should Look for in Makeup?

Lomas states, "Look for hyaluronic acid, glycerin and squalane, which are all great for skin hydration; these stop makeup from sitting in fine lines. Then, look for peptides and niacinamide, which will help with texture and barrier support over time. I also always suggest opting for makeup products marketed as hydrating or radiance-boosting rather than heavier matte finishes, as these will sit better on the skin and look more natural instead of cakey and accentuating fine lines."

What Ingredients Should Those With Mature Skin Should Avoid in Makeup?

"If you have mature skin, you should avoid products that contain large amounts of heavy silicones, as they can sit on the surface and highlight texture instead of smoothing it. High alcohol content should also ring alarm bells, because of the harsh drying effect it can have on the skin. I also always suggest avoiding makeup products marketed as matte or long-wear formulas, as these are built to grip the skin and tend to dry it out, as well as any formulas with shimmer or glitter because they draw attention to texture instead of disguising it," explains Lomas.
