Our Take: Curating a Conscious Closet: A Gentle Start to Sustainable Style

The gentle hum of intention. It’s a feeling many of us are beginning to embrace, a quiet recalibration of our daily lives. This resonates deeply with the thoughtful approach shared by /u/babyyyyybyebyebye, who is embarking on a meaningful journey to curate a more conscious closet, particularly with the hopeful anticipation of new beginnings. The desire to approach this transition with grace and understanding, rather than rigid pronouncements, is the very essence of mindful living. It’s about understanding that perfection is not the goal, but rather progress, a steady hand guiding us toward choices that feel more aligned with our evolving selves and the world around us.

The wisdom in sorting, in creating distinct spaces for materials, speaks to a considered process. It acknowledges the nuances of our current wardrobes, the pieces we’ve loved and worn, and the complexities of textile production. Embracing natural fibers and even the thoughtfully chosen second-hand rayon and viscose, acknowledges that sustainability is not a monolithic decree, but a spectrum of choices. The contemplation of upcycling, transforming cherished garments into heirlooms for future celebrations, is a beautiful testament to extending the life and meaning of our possessions. It’s in these moments of creative reinterpretation that we weave our personal stories into the fabric of sustainability, creating traditions that honor both the past and the future.

This journey, as shared, is a personal exploration. It’s about listening to our intuition, about feeling the weight of our choices, and about finding a sense of peace in the process. The questions posed are not for judgment, but for connection, for the shared understanding that we are all learning, adapting, and striving to live more intentionally. It’s a reminder that the most profound shifts often begin with a gentle breath, a quiet contemplation, and a willingness to explore what truly nourishes our sense of self and our connection to the world.

From SustainableFashion

I’m at the very beginning of my sustainability journey, and I’m working to start purging my closet. I’m hoping to conceive in the next six months or so, so this feel high-priority at this time.

I sorted my clothes into sections; section 1 is cumulatively 100% natural fibers + rayon and viscose. I’ve included rayon and viscose because I already buy nearly all my clothes secondhand, and is does seem that the primary concerns with those materials are in production. Sanity checking that buying them secondhand is sustainable - my main concern is microplastics shed.
