Has secondhand shopping changed how you think about sustainability?
Our take
I’ve been trying to be more intentional about how I buy clothes, especially after learning more about overproduction and textile waste. Thrifting locally helped a lot, but I’ve also started exploring online secondhand spaces where items actually get a second life instead of sitting in landfills.
Recently I’ve watched a few live secondhand sales on whatnot, mostly people reselling vintage or gently used pieces and talking openly about condition, materials, and fit. Seeing items reused in real time feels very aligned with slow fashion values, and it’s made me pause before buying anything new.
I’m curious how others here approach secondhand shopping today. Do you stick to local thrifts only, or do online resale platforms play a role in your sustainable fashion habits too?

- How to shop fashion sustainably?Hi everyone. I want to ask for advice on how to shop sustainably, or more ethical and eco-friendly. What's your shopping process? My experience in the Philippines is shop in thrift shops or look for overruns, and repair clothes I already have. Unfortunately I haven't seen any sustainable brands and have any thrift finds where they make fashion I prefer, which is usually gen z fashion that you find on pinterest. Mainly but nit limited to streetwear, academia, and y2k I think they're called. A brand I found that fits these is Carmico. Another problem I have is I was thinking of buying something from the thrift store and just customize it to my liking to a tailor. But when I tried customization before, I wasn't really satisfied with the results. And as of now I'm not really interested in making my own clothes. Do you have any tips? Thanks! Edit: Another brand with designs I like is Koi Footwear, though I'm unsure on their sustainability. submitted by /u/KaelPizza [link] [comments]
- Where do you usually find sustainable fashion at reasonable prices?I’ve been trying to be more intentional about sustainable fashion, but prices can vary a lot depending on where you shop. Between ethical brands, small designers, and different marketplaces, it feels like knowing where to look really matters. I usually compare materials, production practices, and pricing across different sources to find pieces that make sense long term. I’ve also been checking live auctions on whatnot, where sustainably made pieces and ethical brands show up occasionally. - How do you feel about fast fashion and its environmental impact?I’ve been thinking a lot about fast fashion lately (like Shein, H&M, etc.) and wanted to hear different perspectives. For those who shop from these brands, how do you personally feel about the environmental impact—like pollution, waste, and overproduction? This isn’t meant to judge at all. I completely understand that for a lot of people, budget plays a huge role and sometimes these are the most accessible options. A bit of my story: during my first year in college, I became more aware of what’s happening behind the scenes in the fashion industry, especially with fast fashion. Since then, I’ve tried to shift toward slow fashion, and over time I also started paying attention to materials—learning more about how natural fibers can be more environmentally friendly. I still love fashion and expressing myself through clothes, but that awareness really changed how I see my choices. I’m not perfect with it, but it’s something I try to be mindful of. I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts—whether you still shop fast fashion, are trying to move away from it, or feel conflicted about it. - Essay on the Subculture of Second-hand shoppingHi guys! Im doing an essay about thrifting and second-hand shopping(specifically clothing) and was wondering if anyone would be able to answer some questions. I appreciate any help. Feel free to answer some if you cant do all. The questions: Why do you think thrifting/second-hand shopping has become so popular? What do you think the pros and cons of thrifting are? What motivated your passion for thrifting? Do you thrift with other people? Do you believe that more known or high-end brands should be priced higher than lesser known brands? Should thrifting prices increase with inflation? Do you see thrifting as a “treasure hunt”?
