I Asked an Expert What Short Hair Trends Will Be Popular This Autumn—They Said These 6

The cyclical nature of fashion is undeniable, but the resurgence of short hair as a dominant trend this autumn feels particularly resonant. It’s not merely a fleeting style; it signals a shift towards a more streamlined, confident aesthetic – a quiet rebellion against the maximalism that has characterized recent years. The article highlighting six upcoming short hair trends, alongside our own piece The Bob Isn't Going Anywhere—Here Are 6 Ways to Wear It This Autumn, Per Top Hairstylists, underscores this point – the bob, in its various iterations, remains a cornerstone, demonstrating a desire for timelessness and effortless chic. This echoes a broader cultural movement towards intentionality and mindful consumption, where carefully considered style choices take precedence over chasing every passing fad. It’s about investing in a look that feels authentic and empowering, rather than fleetingly fashionable.

The rise of short hair also aligns perfectly with the current beauty landscape, which, as we explored in We're Taking Beauty Back to School—These Are the A+ Trends You'll Want to Try, is increasingly focused on clean lines, understated elegance, and a return to fundamentals. This isn't about elaborate styling or fussy details; it’s about embracing the natural texture and shape of the hair. Furthermore, the article’s emphasis on various short styles beyond the bob— pixie cuts, textured crops, and layered bobs—suggests a move away from rigid uniformity and towards personalized expression. The shades highlighted in 3 Experts Confirm It: These Are Autumn's Biggest Hair Colour Trends offer a complementary perspective, demonstrating how strategic color choices can further enhance the impact of a short haircut, adding depth and dimension without overwhelming the overall aesthetic.

Beyond the purely aesthetic considerations, the popularity of short hair speaks to a deeper cultural shift. It’s a bold choice, often perceived as liberating and empowering, particularly for women. It requires a certain level of self-assurance and a willingness to embrace vulnerability. This aligns with the broader conversation around feminine power – not as a performative display, but as a quiet strength that radiates from within. The effortless chic associated with short hair styles allows individuals to project confidence and sophistication without relying on elaborate styling or excessive ornamentation. It’s a testament to the idea that true style lies in simplicity and self-possession.

Looking ahead, it will be interesting to observe how these short hair trends evolve throughout the season and beyond. Will the bob maintain its reign, or will other styles, such as the textured crop, gain further traction? More importantly, will the underlying desire for intentionality and understated elegance continue to shape the beauty landscape, influencing not only hair trends but also broader fashion and lifestyle choices? The current trajectory suggests a continued embrace of quiet luxury and a focus on self-expression, solidifying the position of short hair as a powerful and enduring statement.

If there's one hair trend that's not going anywhere this autumn, it's short hair. I'm not just talking about bob hairstyles, either. Yes, the bob is very much here to stay this season, but autumn brings a whole host of short hair trends if you're thinking about getting the chop.

"Long hair will always be in fashion, but we are seeing more clients asking for shorter haircuts, looking for a tailored look that suits their hair texture, highlights their bone structure, but is still versatile and on trend," says Cos Sakkas, three-time British Hairdresser of the Year and Toni&Guy global creative director.

It makes sense, really. A new season always makes me want to try something new with my hair, and after chatting to Sakkas about the biggest autumn short hair trends of 2026, there are plenty of looks to choose from. First up, the "trixie". A soft take on your classic pixie, Sakkas says this will be one of the biggest short hair trends this season. As Sakkas explains, this style balances precision with soft, airy texture. "This version is a gentle, grown-out take on the timeless crop," he says. "Partner with a velvety, ultra-dark brown [hair colour] designed to elevate your style with richness and dimension."

"This bob sits above the shoulders and reinvents the classic cut with an undone, effortless take," Sakkas tells me. "It’s understated, chic and iconic. It feels fresh and fashion-forward but still gives you enough length to wear it tucked behind the ears or pulled back when you want to."

Whilst everyone is busy discussing all of the best fashion looks from the Venice Film Festival, it's Penélope Cruz's honey-coloured bob that's captured my attention. In my opinion, this is the perfect short hairstyle for the autumn months, as the warm, golden hue and sleek finish look so elevated.
