Kaia Gerber's White Two-Piece Set Is a Fresh Take on Her Signature Red Carpet Look
Our take

The cyclical nature of fashion, particularly in the realm of red carpet style, is a fascinating phenomenon, and Kaia Gerber’s recent shift from her signature red column dress to a crisp white two-piece set speaks volumes about this. For years, the column dress, as exemplified by Zoë Kravitz’s consistent embrace of the look [Zoë Kravitz wears one on virtually every red carpet she walks—and has done so for years], has been the go-to for understated elegance. Even Ariana Grande chose to marry in one, cementing its status as a timeless and sophisticated choice. Gerber's move, therefore, isn’t simply a change in outfit; it’s a subtle recalibration of a perceived aesthetic, a whisper of evolution within a well-established visual language. It’s a reminder that even the most steadfast style icons must occasionally refresh their presentation to remain compelling and relevant. The shift also echoes a broader trend of embracing lighter, brighter aesthetics, a reaction perhaps to the heavier, moodier tones that have dominated recent years—a sentiment explored further in our piece about elegant summer outfits transitioning into autumn [I Want to Look Chic, Even in the Rain—5 Elegant Summer Outfits To Wear Into Autumn].
What’s particularly noteworthy is the intentionality behind this seemingly simple change. Gerber isn't abandoning her inherent sophistication; she’s simply translating it into a different form. The white two-piece, with its clean lines and minimalist silhouette, possesses a quiet confidence that aligns perfectly with her established brand. It retains a sense of polish and refinement, hallmarks of her personal style, but injects a dose of modern ease. This resonates with a desire for effortless chic, a quality increasingly sought after by those who appreciate understated luxury. The boldness lies not in extravagance but in the subtle shift, the conscious decision to explore a different facet of her established persona. The current revival of divisive early 2000s trends [The 2000s Most Divisive Heel Trend Is Coming Back—Here’s How It Girls Are Wearing It in 2026] highlights the ever-present dance between nostalgia and innovation in fashion, and Gerber’s move fits neatly within this larger context – a nod to classic elegance, while maintaining a distinctly contemporary feel.
This evolution also underscores the growing power of individual style narratives. Celebrities are no longer solely defined by the designers they wear; they are architects of their own visual identities. Gerber has carefully cultivated a persona of quiet confidence and effortless cool, and her fashion choices consistently reinforce that image. The white two-piece isn't a random selection; it's a deliberate articulation of her personal brand, a visual shorthand that communicates her values and aspirations. It speaks to a generation that values authenticity and self-expression over overt displays of wealth or trend-chasing. The move away from the almost ubiquitous column dress signifies a maturation of her style, a willingness to experiment while staying true to her core aesthetic principles. It’s a demonstration of how a single garment can communicate a complex narrative about identity, aspiration, and evolving style.
Ultimately, Kaia Gerber's shift represents more than just a change in wardrobe. It’s a reflection of the broader cultural conversation around style, individuality, and the evolving role of celebrities as style influencers. The question now becomes: will this embrace of effortless white become a new signature, or is it a fleeting exploration, a momentary deviation from her established aesthetic? And more importantly, how will other style icons respond – will we see a wider embrace of lighter, more minimalist red carpet looks, or will the column dress retain its reign as the ultimate symbol of Hollywood elegance?
For most of Hollywood's elite, the column dress is considered a signature. Zoë Kravitz wears one on virtually every red carpet she walks—and has done so for years. Ariana Grande even got married in one. And while the look has certainly withstood the test of time, I'll be the first to admit: an update wouldn't hurt.
And that's exactly what Kaia Gerber served up on her most recent red carpet. On August 3, the second-generation supermodel attended yet another premiere for the ongoing press tour for her new Hulu series, The Shards. Continuing her own column skirt fixation, she wore an all-white iteration for a photo call in Berlin, Germany.
But this wasn't the straightforward gown we're used to seeing on the star. Instead of your standard floor-length LBD, Gerber wore a two-piece set in stark white. The custom Prada number was minimalistic as they come, with a pin-straight skirt and a matching crop top—both made of luxe satin crepe. Despite its innate simplicity, the co-ord made a major impact.

Its lone statement design element was visible only from behind. The cropped top boasted an open back with three simple straps holding it perfectly in place.
When it came time to select accessories, Gerber stuck to the same pared-back energy. She wore a single diamond tennis bracelet and simple stud earrings. And thanks to her outfit's precise tailoring, her shoes were rendered totally invisible.

Gerber has been pushing the column skirt agenda for years—and white dresses, specifically, are her bread and butter. Back in 2024, she wore a sequin style to the Met Gala (another custom Prada look).

She also wore the bandage dress version of her present-day look on the red carpet for the premiere of Shell during the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. This look was particularly notable as it was an homage to her mother Cindy Crawford, who wore a near-identical design to the 1993 Oscars.

Long live the column skirt.
