Quiet Luxury Scents: Why Lavender Dominates This Season's Elevated Fragrances

I say this with my full faculties and all the confidence in the world: Creed’s Iris Debonair is the best perfume the house has ever launched. Does it have the storied legacy of the Aventus line? No. But not even the gorgeous pineapple note in the brand’s most popular perfume can make me get over how good Iris Debonair smells. Bergamot, English lavender, violet leaf, iris, and more are featured in this perfume, housed in a beautiful translucent periwinkle bottle. This perfume smells clean and fresh in a way that comes off almost a little soapy, but when you really take in a good lungful, the beautiful nuance of iris becomes even more apparent. I don’t know who the nose behind this scent is, but whoever you are, you need a raise. Immediately.

Another perfume that came across my desk is Mind Games’ Knight’s Tour, and my goodness, it’s fabulous. Lavender and saffron are the key notes, but they are complemented by nutmeg, ginger, and benzoin. The combination it creates is super cool-girl coded, and to be honest, this formula has dethroned my previous obsession, J'adoube, as my favorite perfume from the brand.

I wasn’t much of a Balenciaga gal, but the brand’s fragrance launch may just have converted me. Vanilla XXL, in particular, is a syrupy, boozy take on the popular gourmand scent, but the musk note adds a creaminess that makes it smell a little like Rum and Raisin ice cream (if you know, you know). I can already see it: me, in a tiny black dress, heels, and my favorite vintage mink coat gliding around a holiday party, smelling exactly like this fragrance. I couldn’t paint a more sensual picture.

You’ll have to catch this one while you can, as it’s a city exclusive available only in Paris. Le Labo’s Vanille 44 is a painfully cool take on vanilla, blending incense, guaiac wood, aldehydes, and musks for a more intimate, “skin scent” take on the gourmand note. If you don’t love vanillas that lean more toward the baked-goods end of the spectrum, this is a perfect (and very cozy) place to start.

Again, I don’t typically recommend citrus-leaning perfumes for fall, but Bond No. 9’s Scent of Peace for All is making me eat my words. I say citrus-leaning because the perfume opens with notes of pink grapefruit, tangerine, and creamy pear, then gives way to bran absolute, tobacco, and musk, among other heart and base notes. The combination shifts from effervescent and citrusy to green and slightly herbaceous, then dries down close to the skin, where it lingers for hours.

I am new to the Véronique Gabai fan club, but Eau de la Nuit has me vying to become president. This perfume is technically a booster, meaning it was made to enhance the longevity of the fragrances that it’s paired with. However, I’ve been wearing it on its own, and I have no other words to describe it other than “wow.” Bergamot, pink pepper, and woods are the stars of this formulation, but I smell the sparkling, citrusy quality the bergamot adds throughout the fragrance's life, and it makes me want to spray the entire bottle onto my body at once. Is that excessive? Yes. Will it make you want to do the same? Also yes.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian is well known for the famous Baccarat Rouge 540, but not enough people talk about the oud collection from the brand. The latest addition to the line is called Oud Velvet Mood, and it feels like the missing puzzle piece that has found its perfect place between the brand’s two previous oud scents. This iteration has notes of saffron, peach, jasmine, and, of course, agarwood, also known as oud. It’s a surprisingly warm and wearable oud perfume that I think anyone would really appreciate, as it’s one of the most unisex ouds I’ve come across in a while.

I will say this until I am blue in the face, but Alberto Morillas is a legitimate genius. The perfumer behind my wedding perfume is also the nose behind Gucci’s The Voice of the Snake, another surprisingly wearable oud bomb. Oud, patchouli, saffron, and leather are a few of the notes you’ll encounter in this scent, but despite how heavy all of this sounds, it warms up into a sweet, resinous concoction on my skin that I simply cannot get enough of.

If you want a perfume that people will love but can’t quite pinpoint, the aptly named I Don’t Know What by D.S. & Durga should be on your list. Bergamot, iso e. super, and civetone (a synthetic musk) perfectly mesh together to create a scent that almost feels like the Pro Max version of your skin. Depending on how much of a presence you want to be for the day, one or two sprays keep it at a true skin-scent level, while five or more will get you compliments from strangers on the street an almost concerning number of times. Ask me how I know.

If you’ve read even one of my fragrance stories, there's a very good chance that I’ve talked about this perfume. Not only is it my favorite, possibly of all time, but it is the most inoffensive, crowd-pleasing scent that I own. This is thanks to the fact that it is composed of a single note, iso e super, a scent that smells different on everyone. On me, it smells clean and a little sweet, but never overwhelming, no matter how much I spray, which is the magic of this composition.
