Sunglass Nails Were All Over the Diane von Furstenberg Runway—And Officially My Favorite Fall Manicure Trend
Our take

The resurgence of the "sunglass" manicure, as showcased prominently at Diane von Furstenberg’s recent runway show, feels remarkably fitting for the current moment. Henry Zankov's debut collection, a thoughtful reimagining of the house’s signature ‘70s glamour—and iconic wrap dresses For Henry Zankov, DVF Is a Homecoming, signals a return to understated elegance, a sensibility that aligns perfectly with the quiet luxury aesthetic dominating both fashion and beauty trends. The sunglass nail, with its gradient effect mimicking the lenses of sunglasses, isn’t about ostentation; it’s about a cool, effortless sophistication. It's a subtle detail, a quiet confidence that speaks volumes without needing to shout. This aesthetic shift is particularly relevant given the broader conversations around mindful consumption and the growing awareness of fashion’s environmental impact, as highlighted in the sobering piece Fashion’s Most Disgusting Product, prompting a desire for longevity and enduring style rather than fleeting trends.
The beauty of the sunglass manicure lies in its versatility and the mood it evokes. It’s not a flashy, attention-grabbing design; instead, it suggests a sun-drenched afternoon, a relaxed state of mind, and a sense of understated cool. The gradient, often blending soft browns, creams, and golds, feels inherently warm and inviting. It's a departure from the increasingly maximalist nail art trends of recent years – the intricate designs, the 3D embellishments, the bold color combinations. This move toward subtlety mirrors the broader fashion landscape, where designers are prioritizing quality, craftsmanship, and timelessness over fleeting trends. The DVF show itself, featuring flowing fabrics and gorgeous prints The Best Celebrity Outfits at New York Fashion Week 2026 Are Putting on Their Own Runway Show, further emphasizes this shift towards refined elegance, and the sunglass manicure serves as the perfect finishing touch. It feels considered, intentional, and effortlessly chic – a hallmark of the quiet luxury movement.
Beyond the aesthetic appeal, the popularity of the sunglass manicure speaks to a broader cultural desire for self-expression through subtle details. It's about curating a personal style that feels authentic and aligned with one’s values, rather than blindly following trends. The manicure becomes a quiet statement – a signal of someone who appreciates quality, understands nuance, and possesses a certain level of self-assurance. It’s a form of understated elegance that resonates with a generation increasingly wary of overt displays of wealth and status. This trend isn't about showing off; it’s about embodying a feeling, a mood, a lifestyle. It’s about projecting an aura of calm confidence and effortless style.
Ultimately, the sunglass manicure’s rise to prominence signals a significant shift in the beauty landscape. It’s a move away from the hyper-saturated, trend-driven world of nail art and towards a more considered, nuanced approach. It’s a reflection of the broader cultural conversation around quiet luxury, mindful consumption, and the power of understated elegance. The question now is: will this trend evolve into something more elaborate, or will it remain a testament to the enduring appeal of simplicity and subtle sophistication? Perhaps the most intriguing development will be seeing how the technique is adapted and interpreted by different nail artists and individuals, further solidifying its place as a key element of the modern, refined aesthetic.
Henry Zankov made his debut as the creative director of Diane Von Furstenberg at New York Fashion Week S/S '27, and with it came the obvious wrap dresses, flowing fabrics, and gorgeous prints (lots of leopard!). But it also brought an unanticipated, but very fabulous manicure selection. Editorial nail artist Miss Pop is the genius behind what she’s dubbed the “sunglass nail trend,” and mark my words, it’s about to be one of the biggest fall looks for the fashion crowd.
It's a bit on the nose, but the whole idea is that nail polish is akin to sunglasses—slightly tinted, half-sheer, and the finishing touch to any fabulous outfit. “With the glass nail trend taking over, we wanted to give it a more sheer, modern twist,” says Miss Pop, who was in charge of ideating manicures for the show. “It’s effortlessly cool, like your favorite pair of sunglasses.”
Her inspiration came primarily from the collection's color palette. Think: rich browns, striking greens, and sheer fabrics. But the colors have less to do with the trend than the application. You really need two key components: a slightly sheer polish and a high-shine top coat. For this particular show, though, Miss Pop used the Essie Special Effects line, which is a range of holographic, duochrome, and light-reflecting pigments.

If you’re trying to recreate the look at home, it’s honestly pretty easy and can be accomplished in just two to three simple coats. To start, use just one layer of polish—this will ensure that your polish is slightly sheer and jelly-like. If you’re attempting to create a multi-dimensional shade, consider layering a complementary shade on top.
Then, the most important step is a high-shine top coat that delivers an uber-glassy finish. “If a cat eye nail is a shooting star, a glass nail is the Northern Lights,” Miss Pop previously told MC. “It has a ton more depth, thanks to the added glass-like gloss on the nail.”

Part of the Liquid Diamonds collection, this shade is a stunning chestnut brown with a golden shimmer undertone. It's a bit deeper than a traditional copper and has a slight metallic finish.

If you're not one to go all out with nail trends (hi, yes, me), I highly recommend this shade. It's a pinky-beige neutral, but still has that duo-chrome finish you need to execute this trend.

Matcha shades (and perfumes) are everywhere right now. If this color is speaking to you, get it on ASAP while the weather still feels summery.
