This Casually Cool Shoe Trend Is the It Girl Secret to Styling Tank Tops This Fall
Our take

The perennial dance between clinging to summer’s ease and embracing the structured elegance of fall is a familiar one, and this article’s focus on a specific shoe trend as the bridge between the two feels particularly resonant. The suggestion that a carefully chosen pair of shoes can elevate a simple tank top into a seasonally appropriate ensemble speaks to a broader shift in how we approach transitional dressing. It’s a rejection of the wholesale replacement of a wardrobe, opting instead for subtle, intentional layering and styling that honors both the warmth we’ve enjoyed and the cooler tones to come. This echoes the broader sentiment explored in [Stylish People Are Already Swapping Their Summer Perfumes for This Sophisticated Autumn Note], where the shift isn't about discarding the old entirely but rather finding a more refined, autumnal iteration of a beloved scent. The casual coolness championed here is less about fleeting trends and more about a considered approach to personal style – a quiet confidence that allows for enjoyment of the present while acknowledging the changing seasons.
The appeal of this "it girl secret" – as the article frames it – lies in its accessibility. It’s not about investing in a whole new capsule wardrobe or chasing the latest runway looks. Instead, it’s about recognizing the power of a single, well-chosen accessory to transform an existing outfit. This aligns with a larger movement away from ostentatious displays of wealth and towards a more understated, “quiet luxury” aesthetic. We’ve seen this reflected in the ongoing discussions surrounding fashion’s rules, as highlighted by [It Girls Are Protesting Fashion's Most Outdated Rule in This Classic Fall Uniform], where even established icons like Kendall Jenner are challenging traditional seasonal expectations. It’s a move towards a more individualistic and sustainable approach to fashion, one that prioritizes personal expression over rigid adherence to trends. The emphasis on Dakota Johnson’s look as an example further reinforces this – her style is often characterized by effortless chic and a sense of timelessness, qualities that resonate deeply with an audience seeking a more enduring sense of style.
The significance of this trend extends beyond simply what we’re wearing. It reflects a broader cultural shift towards embracing comfort and individuality while maintaining a sense of refinement. The desire to prolong the feeling of summer, even as the weather changes, speaks to a longing for ease and a rejection of the often-rigid structures imposed by seasonal expectations. This resonates with a growing awareness of the performative aspects of fashion and a desire to cultivate a more authentic and personal style. The article’s suggestion that a simple shoe can be the key to unlocking this transformation is both practical and empowering, encouraging readers to experiment with their existing wardrobes and find creative ways to express themselves. The focus on mood and feeling, rather than overt displays of trendiness, is a subtle but powerful statement about the evolving nature of style. It’s a move away from the frantic pace of fast fashion and towards a more considered, intentional approach to dressing. Even the mention of fall candles – [I’m Scenting My Apartment With the 10 Best Fall Candles] – reinforces this desire for a sensory experience that bridges the gap between seasons, creating a sense of comfort and atmosphere.
Ultimately, this trend suggests that the future of fall fashion isn't about a dramatic shift in style, but rather a subtle evolution. It’s about finding ways to integrate the best of summer and fall into a cohesive and personal aesthetic. It's a question of how we can maintain a sense of ease and individuality while embracing the changing seasons and evolving our personal style. Will we see this casual-cool approach continue to dominate, or will the pendulum swing back towards more structured, seasonal dressing? And perhaps more importantly, will we, as consumers, continue to prioritize intentionality and personal expression over fleeting trends?
As much as I adore fall fashion, with its moody color palette and cozy sweaters, I can't ditch my summer staples for cold-weather counterparts just yet. My solution? A shoe trend that's autumnal enough to transform my well-loved tank top from a summer to fall fixture. The look isn't as unconventional as it seems: It already earned Dakota Johnson's endorsement.
Despite the heatwaves in our zip codes, Johnson and I started September in the same tank-and-flats formula, down to the seasonal sheen on our ballerinas. The Materialists actor wore a white square-neck top with baggy black bottoms, a leather tote bag, and slipper-style ballet flats from The Row. Her sleeveless shirt seems to be the Leset Nando Tank she wore with jeans and high-vamp flats in late July.

The velvet finish of the bow-topped ballerinas helped Johnson switch to fall-tested textures. You may recognize their elasticized sidewalls from some of her late-spring looks: Back in April, the $850 slippers joined the A-lister's black Agolde denim and barn jacket by The Row for a stroll around New York City.
Johnson and I aren't alone in our affinities for ballet-flat-and-tank-top outfits. In fact, most style setters didn't wait for September to make the unlikely duo a mainstay in their regular rotation.
Early in the summer, Sarah Pidgeon paired an almost identical tank with suede heeled ballet flats, courtesy of Kaia Gerber's spring collaboration with Repetto. Soon after, Zendaya was photographed in between The Odyssey events in NYC, her white tank top and velvet Maison Margiela Tabi Flats. As recently as the 2026 Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2, Kendall Jenner styled a more structured tank with black ballerinas.
See? Not only did the cool-girl combination play a part in celebrities' warm-weather wardrobes, but it's also sticking around for another season. I'll be living in ballet flats and tanks for the foreseeable future, but what about you? Once October rolls around, maybe we can consider switching to cardigans. For now, stick to the season-defying styles below.
