What Shoe Trend? Margaret Qualley Goes Barefoot for 'The Dog Stars' Premiere in Chanel's Most Divisive Sandals

Our take

The red carpet saw a daring debut at the 'The Dog Stars' premiere: Margaret Qualley, barefoot and radiant in Chanel, championed the season's most talked-about shoe trend – or lack thereof. Her choice of Chanel's divisive sandals sparked immediate conversation, proving that sometimes, the most striking accessory is a conscious absence. This bold move signals a shift toward understated confidence, echoing a broader movement within fashion. What Shoe Trend? Margaret Qualley Goes Barefoot for 'The Dog Stars' Premiere in Chanel's Most Divisive Sandals

The fashion world thrives on disruption, on challenging established norms, and Chanel’s recent foray into sole-less sandals embodies this spirit perhaps more boldly than most. Margaret Qualley's debut of the divisive footwear at the premiere of *The Dog Stars* isn't merely a celebrity endorsement; it's a calculated statement. The initial reaction – a veritable internet fracture – only amplified the design's impact. It’s a fascinating counterpoint to trends like the understated sneaker styling championed by Hailey Bieber Hailey Bieber Knows This Sneaker Color Trend Looks Best With Black Leggings, demonstrating a clear divergence within contemporary luxury aesthetics. This move signals a shift away from the consistently polished, easily digestible trends that often dominate red carpets, and towards something far more conceptual and, frankly, intriguing. The whisper fringe trend gaining traction I'm Looking Ahead—Per Celebrity Hairstylists, Whisper Fringe Is Going to Be Major Come Fall also points to a broader desire for subtle experimentation within high fashion, albeit in a very different medium.

The power of this moment lies in its deliberate provocation. Chanel isn't seeking universal appeal with these sandals; they're igniting conversation, challenging perceptions of what constitutes luxury footwear, and, ultimately, solidifying their position as a vanguard of avant-garde design. The "dogs out" choice—referring to going barefoot—amplifies this narrative. It’s a rejection of the often-stuffy formality of red carpet attire, embracing a sense of ease and uninhibited self-expression. Qualley's willingness to embody this daring aesthetic further elevates the moment, aligning her personal brand with Chanel's provocative vision. It’s a strategic partnership that leverages her existing reputation as a style icon who isn't afraid to push boundaries, resonating with a consumer base that values authenticity and unconventionality over predictable trends. The fact that the design was met with such strong reactions underscores the effectiveness of this strategy; it’s impossible to ignore.

Beyond the immediate visual impact, the sole-less sandal phenomenon speaks to a larger cultural conversation about comfort, accessibility, and the evolving definition of luxury. Traditional luxury often equated to opulent materials, intricate craftsmanship, and obvious displays of wealth. However, a new generation of consumers is redefining luxury, prioritizing experiences, individuality, and a sense of effortless style. This shift is reflected in the rise of “quiet luxury,” where understated elegance and impeccable quality take precedence over ostentatious branding. Yet, Chanel’s sandals push beyond quiet luxury, introducing an element of playful absurdity that challenges the notion that luxury must always be serious or conventional. They’re a statement piece, designed to be noticed and discussed, even if that discussion involves a degree of bewilderment. The simple act of walking barefoot, reimagined through a luxury lens, is a powerful commentary on the disconnect between the constructed world of fashion and the realities of everyday life.

Ultimately, Qualley's embrace of these sandals signals a potential turning point in red carpet style. Will this be a fleeting moment of daring experimentation, or the harbinger of a new era of unconventional footwear? The fashion landscape is constantly evolving, and the willingness of brands and celebrities to embrace the unexpected will be crucial in shaping its future. The "woke up like this" aesthetic Woke up like this has certainly paved the way for a more relaxed and authentic presentation of style, and Chanel’s sandals might just be the next step in that evolution. The question now is: will other celebrities follow suit, or will this remain a singular, unforgettable moment of fashion audacity?

Ever since Chanel debuted the sole-less sandals on the Cruise 2027 runway and divided the internet, I've been scanning the red carpet circuit for a celebrity brave enough to step-and-repeat in them. On August 20, Margaret Qualley proved she has what it takes: The actor went dogs out at The Dog Stars London premiere in Chanel's semi-barefoot shoes. To no one's surprise, they are all anyone can talk about again.

Qualley started the press tour for the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film, also starring Jacob Elordi, before its theatrical release on Aug. 28. For the event, her stylist, Danielle Goldberg, outfitted her in a black dress from the French luxury house and the barely-there sandals, which featured a duo of bow-tied bands, Chanel-branded heel caps... and nothing more.

Looks like Qualley booked a pedicure appointment before walking the red carpet—her freshly painted black toes were on full display. Being one of creative director Matthieu Blazy's brand ambassadors, Qualley had no issues securing another fresh-from-the-runway design: a plunging little black dress covered in circle-shaped fringe.

The midi's asymmetrical hem was just short enough to showcase the ballet flat-looking backs of her footwear, which featured the interlocked Cs logo. (As if one could forget the brand responsible for the viral design.)

While Qualley's dress was showcased with the gold pair, the black version of the heel cap also appeared on the Cruise catwalk. Back then, Blazy offset the less-is-more look of the black footwear design with a black-and-white romper, a tweed jacket, and, unexpectedly, a cloth swim-style cap.

Before Qualley could find her seat inside the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square theater, reactions from fellow fashion people started rolling in. "Only the most beautiful girl in the world wearing the freakiest shoes in the world," fashion trend analyst Mandy Lee said on Instagram. "Hop on the freaky shoe grind before you get left behind," she added, proving to naysayers that there's always a spot for divisive footwear. Meanwhile, deputy director of social media Christina D'Ambrosio called Qualley's red-carpet look "iconic."

The Substance star isn't the only A-lister with the courage to try unconventional trends. Jennifer Lawrence has a soft spot for toe-ring sandals, Zendaya's Maison Margiela Tabi Ballet Flats are stuck like glue to her soles, and Jennifer Lopez recently sported naked PVC pumps around Italy.

That said, stay tuned for the next barefoot sandals sighting. Knowing her risk-taking style, I bet Chanel ambassador Kristen Stewart already has her eyes on the same polarizing pair.
