Lewis Hamilton's Italian Grand Prix Outfits Are So Fall-Coded

Our take

Lewis Hamilton’s presence at the Italian Grand Prix extended beyond the racetrack, establishing him as a style icon. This year, Hamilton masterfully embraced autumnal elegance with two distinct, yet equally compelling, overcoat-centric looks showcased during the Apple TV streamed race. His choices exemplify a quiet confidence and intentionality, reflecting a modern sensibility within a traditionally sporty realm.

Lewis Hamilton’s recent Italian Grand Prix appearances weren't just about securing points on the track; they were a masterclass in understated, elevated style. The racing star’s choice of two distinct overcoats – a thick caramel hue paired with a black suit – signals a fascinating evolution in celebrity dressing, moving beyond fleeting trends towards a more considered, timeless aesthetic. It’s a development that resonates strongly with the current cultural shift towards quiet luxury, a sensibility we’ve been observing in broader fashion trends, as evidenced by pieces like those highlighted in Tiny Blush, Bag Charms, and More: Alexandra Leclerc's New Rhode Collection Is Coming—A Sneak Peek. Hamilton's approach feels less about blatant branding and more about creating a mood – one of effortless sophistication and considered self-expression. This aligns with a growing appreciation for enduring style over disposable trends, a perspective we've explored in our piece on A Definitive List of Celebrity Stylists Who Changed the Way We Dress Over the Past 20 Years, where the lasting impact of stylists who champion classic silhouettes is undeniable.

The significance of Hamilton’s choices extends beyond just the garments themselves. He’s consistently demonstrated a willingness to push boundaries with his style, often incorporating unexpected details and bold colors. However, this move towards a more muted, refined palette feels particularly deliberate. It’s a reaction, perhaps, against the relentless cycle of micro-trends and the pressure to constantly reinvent oneself. It suggests a confidence that transcends the need for ostentatious displays of wealth or status. The overcoat, in particular, is a powerful symbol of this shift. It’s a garment traditionally associated with timeless elegance and understated power, and Hamilton’s interpretation feels both modern and deeply rooted in classic style. It's a visual narrative of someone comfortable in their own skin, projecting an aura of quiet assurance that’s far more compelling than any fleeting fashion statement. Considering how style choices often mirror broader cultural currents, Hamilton’s move speaks to a collective desire for a more grounded, authentic approach to self-presentation.

Furthermore, this development reinforces the increasingly blurred lines between traditionally masculine and feminine aesthetics. The overcoat, while a staple in menswear, is increasingly embraced by women as a symbol of power and sophistication. Hamilton’s confident wearing of this garment further normalizes the fluidity of style, challenging conventional gender norms and promoting a more inclusive understanding of fashion. It's a subtle but powerful message, particularly given his platform and influence. The choice of a caramel hue, rather than a stark black, also contributes to this softening of the masculine silhouette, adding a touch of warmth and approachability. This nuanced approach to style—subtly challenging norms while maintaining an air of refined elegance—is something we’ve observed in the evolving wardrobes of many contemporary figures, as seen in how figures like Brenda Song are embracing nostalgic Y2K trends with a modern sensibility, as detailed in Brenda Song's Wardrobe Staples Include These Nostalgic Y2K Trends.

Ultimately, Lewis Hamilton’s Italian Grand Prix outfits represent more than just a passing fashion moment. They are a reflection of a broader cultural shift towards quiet luxury, understated confidence, and a rejection of fleeting trends. His style choices serve as a powerful example of how personal expression can transcend traditional boundaries and embody a sense of timeless elegance. As celebrity style continues to influence mainstream fashion, it will be fascinating to observe whether this trend towards quiet confidence persists and how it evolves, particularly as the lines between performance and personal style become increasingly blurred in the age of social media and constant visibility. Will we see other influential figures embracing a similar aesthetic, prioritizing quality and enduring style over fleeting trends?

Lewis Hamilton has become known for his dapper and occasionally extravagant style over the years. That sartorial dedication was on full display this weekend at the Italian Grand Prix, when the racing star wore a thick caramel overcoat with a black suit and Louis Vuitton briefcase. The outerwear would have been perfectly appropriate for the current fall season — except that it was 90°F in Monza, where the Ferrari driver placed sixth in the race. The event was live-streamed on Sunday on Apple TV.

Hamilton’s classic menswear look wasn’t his first instance of dressing for fashion’s sake, rather than the weather. In June, he arrived to the Monaco Grand Prix in a similarly bold purple coat over a light pink suit. Rimless sunglasses and gold chain necklaces brought added shine to that ensemble. Both suiting looks were speculated by fans as a reference to his outfit from announcing he’d be joining the Ferrari team in 2025, according to Fashion Times.

Hamilton’s appearance on the Apple TV livestream followed his lengthy past appearances on the service. In 2021, the seven-time Formula One winner was the subject of the original Apple TV documentary Lewis Hamilton: The Winning Formula. In 2023, he also appeared in its three-part series Project ONE: A Milestone in Automotive History alongside David Coulthard and Victoria Swarovski. He even served as a producer and consultant for the company’s hit racing movie F1 last year, which starred Brad Pitt.

Hamilton’s relationship with fashion runs deep as well. He’s attended the Met Gala eight times since his first appearance on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s famous steps in 2015. During his racing career, Hamilton also served as a global brand ambassador with Tommy Hilfiger and IWC Schaffhausen, modeled for Balenciaga, and starred in campaign for Rimowa and Lululemon. He’s also held a long-term partnership with Puma, designing collections for the athletic brand on multiple occasions.

With 10 races remaining in this year’s Grand Prix, Hamilton will already be returning to the racetrack soon. He’ll certainly be delivering standout style moments while doing it, as well.
